Today, (June 12) President George H.W. Bush turned 88 years young. Ironically, the picture shown is of President Bush with my father, Frank Shelton, Sr taken in January 1991 at the United States Capitol. It was his last State of the Union speech to the nation as president and this classic shot was taken with my father before he entered into the House Chamber to deliver his remarks with the whole world watching. What most Americans’ didn’t know Rev. Billy Graham accompanied President Bush that evening in the motorcade to the Capitol. Dad had the honor to shake hands with them both that evening. My father retired as Deputy Chief of the United States Capitol Police and protected SEVEN U.S. Presidents.
Ironically, 25 years ago on this day is when President Ronald Reagan helped topple the Soviet Union with his famous remarks: “Mr. Gorbachev, TEAR DOWN THIS WALL!” Truth be told, President Reagan’s advisors didn’t pen that statement or want it in the speech but leadership must lead and to his credit he did and the Soviets followed. On February 6, 2012 – President Ronald Reagan would have turned 100 and I was contacted by the producer of Gov Sarah Palin Radio to be a guest LIVE for 14 minutes impersonating our Commander in Chief on his big day. It was an honor to say the least. In the words of both president’s – GOD BLESS AMERICA.
