On March 18, 2013 it was my honor to return to Dallas, TX. Just last summer, I was invited to spend 12 glorious days in London, England with Lay Witnesses For Christ as Evangelism Chairman of 2012 Olympics outreach. It was a joy to serve alongside some of America’s greatest athletes (past and present) and “Olympian of the Century” Carl Lewis. We first met in 2011 and both of us were keynote speakers at the Texas Christian High School Athlete of Year Awards and served again in London. Earlier this year, I got word that Dr Sam Mings was honoring me with the “Founder’s Award” at the 2013 gala at the beautiful Dallas/Fort Worth Marriott in the Grand Ballroom in front of 1,200 people. It is not only an honor but humbling.
What an honor to receive the award from nine time gold medalist Carl Lewis and afterward we got to return with a few other friends and family and spend the next few hours overlooking the Dallas skyline on the 22nd floor in the Presidential Suite. Other friends included Dr Joy Macci who has also served as a tennis coach to Venus and Serenna Williams, Lewis Johnson – who is CBS announcer for MARCH MADNESS and he was our host and MC for the evening and some other precious friends.
The highlight was connecting with the talented and gifted athletes whom were nominated for this year awards banquet. Out of 100 nominees one gentleman blessed me particular and he had Downs Syndrome but perservance and passion could be his first and last name. He got a standing ovation and everyone in that place was a WINNER but when they called his name I got off the head dais and stepped down to give him a hug and handshake. Folks who don’t know limits or quit FIRE ME UP!
Two days later, I was fortunate to return to the legendary First Baptist Church of Dallas, TX and spoke to their junior and senior high students. This was my second time speaking to their great group of the last two years and we hope to return Spring 2014. The very next week, FBC Dallas moved into their brand new $130 Million facility.
Texas always does things “BIG” and its a treat to visit the Lone Star State. In life, I am reminded that “quit” and “quiet” sound similar and it does get quiet if you quit. Make sure you give your all before you elect to sit out. In closing, I’m reminded that gold is temporal but God is eternal. Faith and friendships are greater than gold.
