In the past, I was honored to fly on the Boeing 757 known as “Air Force Two.” It is rare to fly on “Air Force One” and even more rare to fly on “Marine One.” My Aunt Barbara Shelton (now deceased) married Joe Quinn from the Eastern Shore of Maryland and he is a well respected businessman and CPA. He ran for Congress in the late 1970’s and lost by a minimal margin but was invited to fly on Marine One with the President who gave a speech in his honor at a campaign stop.

Regardless of where the Marine Corps pick up the President they carry the leader of the free world on one of several dark green helicopters with white letters “United States of America” to the awaiting plane on the runway. It is quite a sight to behold when you see two of the world’s most iconic and powerful modes of flight transportation working together side by side to get the job done. Even more impressive is that they both desire that the other succeeds. Teamwork often includes TWO distinct groups united in ONE common goal. The U.S. Marines and U.S. Air Force respectfully have two totally different job descriptions but when it comes to transporting and ensuring the safety of their Commander in Chief they know their role and do whatever it takes to be successful in furthering their mission and his agenda.

As soon as the President disembarks the Marine helicopter (HMX-1) he is greeted by the commander of the military base and escorted to the awaiting Air Force airplane. As soon as one mission ends the second starts racing down the runway. My question is if the military can work together today for a common good at the highest level of government why do so many presently in either ministry or secular business strike out? President Ronald Reagan had a sign in the Oval, “It’s amazing what one can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit.” Pride kicked Satan out of Heaven and that same arrogance will hinder many others while on Earth. More than ever we need a team spirit and willing to sacrifice ego to benefit others. Never let your insecurity rob another of their destiny. Teamwork enables all to soar but the small, selfish and insecure will be grounded in more ways than one. True leaders desires that we all soar as eagles not be sour like a turkey. True leadership is selfless not selfish. When you know your roll you do it well, with pride and consider it an honor to be part of a larger team. We accomplish more together than as individuals.
